We are transforming product protection. For a future worth living in.

We are leading the way in the protection of our environment: we take
our responsibility as a producer of plastic packaging and
technical films seriously and face up to it with a diverse array of specific measures for protecting the environment and the climate.

We bring our innovativeness and feel for the market to bear in order to sustainably and proactively transform films and packaging. The standards of environmental protection, functionality, quality, and cost effectiveness that we meet in accomplishing this are equally high. We systematically monitor and document all of the key parameters in which Bischof+Klein impacts the environment. We clearly communicate the results in our annual sustainability report.

Plastic – a valued raw material

We do not regard plastic as an expendable material, but as a valuable raw material which we handle equally as circumspectly and responsibly as all other resources.

Voluntary commitment: we are making product protection sustainable.

We are entering into a voluntary commitment: to us, environmental protection is more than merely a collection of legal regulations. It is an elementary contribution to a livable future that we are making out of a sense of conviction. We do not want merely to comply with statutory regulations, but to surpass them. We are already offering a sustainable variant of each of our products – and are continuously working on further improving our environmental performance. We voluntarily assess the impacts of our activities on the environment early on. Our self-imposed obligation includes:

  • Commitment to a livable future with our products
  • Consideration of ecological, social, and economic aspects along the supply chain, from raw material and production up to and including the end of life
  • Controlling environmentally-relevant processes in the context of an environmental management system
  • The efficient use of all resources such as raw materials and energy
  • The substitution of fossil raw materials
  • The development of recyclable products

Environmental management: we systematically protect the environment.

Active environmental protection requires systematic environmental management: we are absolutely certain of this. We have already been pursuing a consistent environmental policy since 1985 in order to implement a sustainable and environmentally sound corporate organization. This orientation is based on substantial investment in modern technology and the continuous improvement of our processes’ environmental compatibility.

We obtain valuable decision-making bases for our activities by analyzing our environmental impacts. Each year, we have our environmental performance audited by independent environmental experts in accordance with the European Union’s EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) seal of quality. To this end, we have introduced environmental management systems at our locations in Lengerich and Konzell; these were audited for the first time in 1996 and 1999 respectively. Among other aspects, our environmental management systems encompass:

  • The systematic determination and evaluation of all environmentally-relevant aspects
  • The measurement of our environmental performance using verifiable key figures
  • Transparency and credibility thanks to active communication
  • The active involvement of employees and relevant, interested parties
  • Continuous, systematic analysis of environmental protection requirements
  • Traceable compliance with environmental law obligations
  • The definition of responsibilities and control mechanisms at departmental and corporate level
  • Implementation in specific, binding obligations

Energy efficiency + emission reduction: we reduce consumption and environmental impacts.

Saving energy and avoiding emissions are the all-important principles according to which we design production processes and the world of work throughout our company. To achieve this, we have established an array of measures that contribute to …

… reducing energy consumption,

… improving energy efficiency in the production department,

… reducing greenhouse gas emissions,

… reducing the use of solvents and other chemicals,

… minimizing noise emissions, and …

… reducing emissions caused by traffic.

Circular economy + resource efficiency: we develop recyclable product protection.

Our products are optimized in terms of material and are increasingly being produced using recycled and non-fossil raw materials in keeping with the circular economy. The 100 percent recyclability of our films and packaging with consistently first-class quality is the declared objective of our development work (e.g., recyclable laminate structures). Since the 1990s, we have been reducing the film thickness of our packaging while maintaining consistent product characteristics.

We assume that, by 2024, over 70 percent of our consumer packaging will be recyclable and/or will contain recycled materials. 80 percent of our industrial packaging are already recyclable. Almost all of our packaging solutions can already be manufactured using a percentage of recycled material depending on their requirement profile. Our contribution to product-related environmental protection and the circular economy:

  • Reduction of raw material use
  • Reduction of film thicknesses
  • Internal recycling of production waste
  • Increasing recyclate contents
  • Processing of renewable raw materials
  • Production of recyclable laminates
  • Improvement of recyclability
  • Reduction of production waste
  • Extensive separate collection of waste

Ecological commitment: we work in collaboration on our future.

Bischof+Klein is an active member of the German Association for Plastics Packaging and Films’ (IK) Executive Committee Environment and Sustainability. Our company is also a member of CEFLEX (Circular Economy for Flexible Packaging). The latter, which is an alliance of over 180 European companies, associations, and organizations, represents the entire flexible packaging value chain. As a member of the German

Association for Plastics Packaging and Films’ “Eco Design” round table, we have brought our know-how to bear in developing guidelines for the eco-design of packaging. We additionally support environmental protection organizations such as “I Plant A Tree” at both local and national level.
